At UP Health System, we’re looking toward the future.
Our entire staff is engaged in a new Journey to Excellence. Together, we are working toward transformational change at our organization. Together, we are working to ensure that you receive the highest quality of care, right here at home. That means improved quality and safety measures, the adoption of advanced technology, effective leadership, and improved physician partnerships, among a number of other exciting initiatives that will be steering our Journey to Excellence.
I’ve had the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with our physicians, our staff, our board, and our community leaders to focus on our vision. We have a tremendous opportunity to make incredible, positive changes for our patients and for the wider UP. Our transformational change is rooted in three key directions: leadership team talent, excellence of culture, and external repositioning. We have brought aboard new executive team members to drive significant change at UPHS – Marquette. Internally, we are enhancing visibility and communication within our organization. And we have exciting regional strategies in development related to the expansion of our services in the Upper Peninsula coming in the near future.
In 2016, we have already seen a number of exciting improvements to our quality of care. Our Marquette hospital was nationally recognized for having one of the lowest pneumonia readmission rates in the entire country by Becker’s Hospital Review, and received Blue Cross/Blue Shield designations for quality and safety in spine surgery, knee and hip replacements, and maternity care. UP Health System – Marquette also received re-verification as a Level II Trauma Center from the American College of Surgeons. This means that UP Health System – Marquette will continue to be the only medical facility in a 160-mile radius of Marquette, MI that is accredited to provide crucial, life-saving services to victims of serious, traumatic accidents and injuries.
Perhaps most excitingly for our community, construction is underway on a new $300+ million hospital and adjoining medical facility in Marquette. And in 2016, we hired more than 40 new medical staff members in multiple specialties to provide the best possible care in our new facility.
These are exciting times for healthcare in the Upper Peninsula. With that in mind, we hope you find this first edition of Healthy Happenings to be both uplifting and informative. We want to keep you in the loop with all the great things that are happening at UP Health System.
Thank you for reading, and thank you to our incredible staff who provide great care for our wonderful communities. We are always driven by our mission: Making communities healthier. This remains in our focus every day, with every patient who walks in our doors.
